Started by: jacks (438)

Hi all. Does anyone know if the council do any form of re-decorating or painting before a new tenant moves in?

Didn't used to unless the new occupant had mobility problems and they couldn't get help?

I used to sub contract for council houses and a lot of my work was, re lets, So when a house was empty, I used to bring the plumbing up to the standard required and joiners would do the same for Wood, Doors, cupboards , etc etc, No decorating was done, but, a painter would paint the doors, skirting boards arc's and stairs,
One one of my last jobs was a flat in Hags Fold and to my surprise, the flat was brought up to showhouse conditions, new kitchen, fitted bedroom, full redec in every room, tables chairs, cups saucers, plates, all you need to move in, even a cooker, micro wave, kettle and toaster and as a date was set for the handover, A council rep was there to overlook the finish, I asked, " who's moving in, Royalty" the rep answered , A poor less fortunate person, he arrives in England tomorrow and I want this place finished by then"
So Jacks, it depends where he is coming from,,,

WN1, when I started working for the Housing Dept in 1987 they had around 36000.....cue Maggie bringing in right to buy and the exodus started . When I finished in 2003 ( because as well as the tories implementing it Labour kept it going ) there was around 22000.

I believe some councils give or did give voucher for the tenant to buy paint and decorating supplies. Usually from a council list of suppliers. Dont know if this is true as its second hand information. Try asking the council.

Frecky

Maggie brought in the right to buy in 1979.

Maggie also made it easier to borrow money, so that folk would be able to get mortgages to buy their council houses.

Starting in the mid 1980s, Council's started to get rid of the system built housing of the 1960s and in Wigan's case thousands of maisonettes, low rise and high rise flats were demolished, because they were expensive to maintain.

All in all, whatever the reasons, social housing stocks nationwide were decimated.

Maggie also stopped Councils building social housing, and instead not for profit housing associations were formed to build social housing, with half the money coming from the government, in return for half the housing association tenancies, going to folk on the local Council accommodation waiting lists.

In 1997 the newly elected Labour Party under Tony Blair stopped housing associations from building social housing, stating that the private sector should be responsible for all housing

In 2010 the newly elected Conservative and LibDem government allowed 'Councils' to once again build social housing.

Just so you all know

TTS....yes and Blair didn't stop the Right to buy....Correct G B , we found after a few short years all the best properties in all the best areas was sold very quickly leaving the housing stock left in, let's say not very affluent areas. The ironic part of all this was the council had to sell off various parts of estates because no-one would move there, to private firms, who would do them up and sell them off. After around a year nearly everyone of these private ones was up for sale or being rented out at twice the cost of council rents, but was still paid for if that person was on benefits by the taxpayer.

Well Jacks, I speak from being' Johnie on the spot ' , Its not a made up tale from the media or s Chinese whisper from the gossip mongers, I was there and was instrumental in turning a run down dwelling into home, over and beyond the standards they would expect us to live into, Decored the gaff and carpeted it with all new furniture, bedding towels, maps of Leigh, information on busses. trains
A few weeks later I was sent back to look at a problem, He could not speak a word of English but with gestures he pointed to the shower and shook his head, He needed instruction to turn it on,
So jacks, if they do that for just one none contributor, Why can they not do it for a working man woman ???

Tom, you're probably thinking of an asylum seeker. We had a liason guy between us and the asylum seeker dept.....Getting back to jacks query, we used to give a decoration allowance for each room if it needed it, but that was 20 years ago. About 18 months ago my grandson and family got a council property in the Pemberton area and it was decorated through before he moved in. I don't think that's standard practice because of a number of reasons, but things change, the best thing to do is contact the Housing dept itself.

Frecky, thank you for the explanation , I'm glad is was an asylum seeker and not an illegal immigrant although I fail to see why, A Wigan born and bred working man/woman is told,,, " sorry we have no dwelling available to YOU"

Really?
What I see is Tom hijacking another thread topic, not contributing anything positive (ironic as it is what he accuses me of) and not really helping to provide an answer. Instead contentiously using it to push his cynical and xenophobic views.

You just cant (or refuse to) see it........but never mind eh

S D.. believe it or not I ‘hate’ being at loggerheads with you but all I see in Toms reply is a hint of what the person enquired about in the opening thread, again I hate to say it but all I can see is bullying on your part, have you got a decent reply to Jacks query .. the minute Toms name crops up you’re there like a cat after its prey and it isn’t very funny or clever .. Tom has done jobs for nearly everyone on this site so you can’t keep on like you do without any comebacks.. and I’m sorry that we’ve had words again.

Momac

On about double posting, doo yoo tap the submit button twice or more when you submit a post, as in you tap it once and nothing seems to have happened, which does happen, but folk should wait a few seconds longer before tapping the submit button again
